About Merzouga

Merzouga is a village at the foot of Erg Chebbi, a sea of dunes about 22 km long near the Algerian border. The sand changes colour through the day, from pale gold at noon to deep orange at dusk.

Nights are spent in camps among the dunes. Nearby are Rissani and its market, the ruins of Sijilmasa at the end of the old caravan road, and Khamlia, a village known for Gnawa music.
